If your small business is not showing up on Google Maps, you are invisible to the customers who are actively looking for you right now. The good news — getting on Google Maps is completely free and takes about 15 minutes. This guide walks you through every step, plus what to do after to make sure you rank above your competitors.
Before You Start — Check If Your Business Is Already Listed
Google sometimes creates automatic listings for businesses based on data from other sources. Before creating a new profile, check whether yours already exists — otherwise you could end up with two listings competing against each other.
Go to Google Maps and search your exact business name and city. If a listing appears that you did not create, you need to claim it rather than create a new one. Click the listing → “Claim this business” → follow the verification steps. Claiming is faster than creating from scratch and preserves any existing reviews.
Step-by-Step: How to Get Your Business on Google Maps
Go to business.google.com and sign in
Visit business.google.com and sign in with your Google account. Use the Google account you want permanently associated with your business — not a personal Gmail you might lose access to. If you do not have a Google account, create one free at google.com/account.
Click “Add your business” and enter your business name
Click the blue “Add your business” button. Type your exact business name. Google will show suggestions — if your business appears in the dropdown, select it (this means a listing already exists and you are claiming it). If not, click “Create a business with this name” to start fresh.
Choose your business category
This is the single most important decision in the entire setup. Your primary category tells Google which searches to show your business for. Be as specific as possible — “Italian Restaurant” beats “Restaurant”. “Emergency Plumber” beats “Plumber”. “Family Solicitor” beats “Lawyer”.
Search your main service in the category field and choose the most accurate option. You can add up to 9 secondary categories later for additional services you offer.
Add your location or service area
Google asks whether customers visit your location or you go to them. Choose the option that matches your business:
Physical location (restaurant, salon, shop, clinic) — enter your full street address. Google Maps will place a pin at this exact location.
Service area business (plumber, electrician, cleaner, contractor) — select “I deliver goods and services to my customers” and set your service area by city, postcode, or radius. You can hide your home address if you work from home.
Add your phone number and website
Enter your main business phone number — the one you want customers to call. Add your website URL if you have one. If you do not have a website yet, you can add it later. Both fields make your listing more complete and more trustworthy to Google’s algorithm.
Complete verification — this is mandatory
Google must verify you are the real owner before your listing goes live. In 2026, the most common verification methods are:
Video verification — record a short video showing your business location, signage, and proof of operation. Most businesses receive this option. Clear lighting and visible business name on signage helps.
Phone or email — available for some business types. Google sends a code you enter to confirm.
Postcard by mail — Google mails a postcard with a PIN to your business address. Takes 5–14 days.
After Verification — Optimise Your Profile to Rank Higher
Getting on Google Maps is step one. Ranking in the top 3 results (the “Local Pack”) requires a fully optimised profile. Here is exactly what to do immediately after verification:
Complete every single field
Go through your profile dashboard and fill in every available section — business hours, special hours for holidays, business description (750 characters — use your main services and location naturally), services offered with descriptions, and accessibility attributes. Profiles with 100% completion consistently outrank incomplete ones.
Add at least 10 photos immediately
Businesses with photos get 42% more direction requests and 35% more website clicks than those without. Upload photos of your exterior (so customers recognise your location), interior, team, work in progress, and completed projects. Add new photos regularly — Google rewards active profiles.
Get your first Google reviews this week
Reviews are the strongest local ranking signal Google uses. A new listing with zero reviews ranks far below a competitor with 50 reviews and a 4.7 star average. Go to your profile dashboard, click “Ask for reviews”, copy the direct link, and send it via WhatsApp or text to your last 10 happy customers today.
Post on your profile weekly
Google Business Profile posts work like mini social media updates that appear directly in your Maps listing. Post once a week — a current offer, a recently completed job, a seasonal tip, or a short update. This signals to Google that your business is active, which improves your local ranking over time.
Why Some Businesses Do Not Appear on Google Maps Even After Listing
| Reason | What happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Not verified | Listing exists but is invisible | Complete verification at business.google.com |
| Incomplete profile | Low ranking, rarely shown | Fill every field — hours, description, photos, services |
| Wrong category | Not showing for relevant searches | Choose most specific primary category available |
| Zero reviews | Ranked below competitors with reviews | Ask recent customers for reviews immediately |
| Suspended listing | Removed from Maps entirely | Check dashboard for suspension notice → appeal |
| Too far from searcher | Not shown for “near me” searches | Add accurate service area, build local citations |

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to get on Google Maps?
After completing verification, most businesses appear on Google Maps within 1–3 days. However, it can take up to 2 weeks in some cases, particularly for brand new businesses. Video verification is typically the fastest method. If your listing has not appeared within 2 weeks of completing verification, check your Google Business Profile dashboard for any notifications or issues.
Is getting on Google Maps free?
Yes — completely free. Creating a Google Business Profile and appearing on Google Maps costs nothing. There is no paid tier required for basic listing. Google does offer paid advertising through Google Local Services Ads and Google Ads, but your organic Google Maps listing is always free.
Can I get on Google Maps without a physical address?
Yes. Service area businesses — plumbers, electricians, cleaners, consultants, delivery services — can create a Google Maps listing without displaying a physical address. During setup, select “I deliver goods and services to my customers” and configure your service area by city, postcode, or radius. You can hide your home address while still appearing in Maps results for your service area.
How do I rank in the top 3 on Google Maps?
Google’s local ranking algorithm uses three main factors: relevance (does your profile match the search), distance (how close are you to the searcher), and prominence (how well-known and trusted is your business). To rank higher: choose the most specific primary category, complete your profile 100%, build Google reviews consistently, post weekly on your profile, ensure NAP consistency across all directories, and add your services with detailed descriptions. Most businesses see significant ranking improvements within 60–90 days of full optimisation.
What if my Google Maps listing is in the wrong location?
Log in to business.google.com → Edit profile → Business location → drag the map pin to the correct position. If the pin is significantly wrong, you may need to re-enter your address. After making the change, Google reviews the edit within 1–3 days before it goes live on Maps. For more help, see our guide on why your Google Business Profile is not showing up.
