You searched for your own business on Google and it’s not there. Or it was showing up last week and now it has disappeared. Either way — it’s a horrible feeling, especially when you know customers are searching for exactly what you offer.
The good news: this is almost always fixable. In 2026, there are 9 specific reasons a Google Business Profile stops showing up, and each one has a clear solution. This guide walks through every one of them — in order of how commonly they occur — so you can find your problem and fix it today.
Reason 1 — Your Profile Is Not Verified (Most Common)
This is the single most common reason a Google Business Profile does not show up. If you created your profile but did not complete the verification process — Google will not show it publicly. Period. Verification is Google’s way of confirming your business is real and exists at the listed address.
How to fix: Complete verification at business.google.com
Go to business.google.com and sign in. If your profile shows a “Verify now” or “Get verified” button — click it immediately. Google offers several verification methods depending on your business type: video verification (most common in 2026), postcard by mail (takes 5–14 days), phone or email (for some business types), or instant verification if your website is already verified in Google Search Console.
Video verification: Google now asks most businesses to record a short video showing your storefront, signage, and proof of operating at the address. Record this in good lighting. Make sure your business name on the sign is clearly visible.
Reason 2 — Your Profile Is Suspended
Google suspends profiles that violate their guidelines — sometimes without notifying the business owner clearly. A suspended profile disappears entirely from Google Maps and Search. Common reasons for suspension include using a virtual office or PO Box as your address, keyword-stuffing your business name (adding “Best” or your services to your name), having a duplicate listing, or making changes that look suspicious to Google’s algorithm.
How to fix: Check your dashboard and appeal
Log in to business.google.com. If your profile is suspended you will see a “Suspended” notice. Review Google’s Business Profile guidelines carefully and fix whatever triggered the suspension — usually the business name, address, or category. Then click “Appeal” and submit with supporting evidence: photos of your physical signage, a utility bill showing your address, or your business registration documents. Google typically responds within 2 weeks.
Most important: Never use a virtual office, co-working space, or PO Box as your business address. Google specifically checks for this.
Reason 3 — You Have a Duplicate Listing
If someone created a Google Business Profile for your business before you did — or if you accidentally created two profiles — Google may suppress both. Having two listings for the same business at the same address confuses Google’s algorithm and often results in neither showing up properly.
How to fix: Find and merge or delete the duplicate
Search your business name on Google Maps. If you see two listings — one may be an unclaimed duplicate. Claim the older or more complete one, then report the duplicate through Google Maps → “Suggest an edit” → “This place is permanently closed” or contact Google Business Profile support to merge them. Keep the listing with more reviews — merging usually transfers reviews to the surviving profile.
Reason 4 — Your Profile Is Incomplete
Google prioritises complete, detailed profiles over thin ones. If your profile is missing key information — business hours, description, category, phone number, photos — Google considers it lower quality and shows it less often. A 40% complete profile competes poorly against a competitor with 100% completion.
How to fix: Complete every single field
Log in to business.google.com and go through every section. Make sure you have filled in: business name (exact legal name only — no keyword stuffing), primary category and secondary categories, full address or service area, phone number, website URL, business hours including special hours, business description (750 characters — use your main keywords naturally), at least 10 photos including exterior, interior, and team photos, products or services listed with descriptions and prices, and Q&A section populated with common questions.
Reason 5 — Wrong Business Category
Your primary category is one of the strongest signals Google uses to decide when to show your profile. If you have selected a vague or incorrect category — like “Company” or “Business” instead of “Plumber” or “Italian Restaurant” — Google will not know which searches to show you for.
How to fix: Choose the most specific primary category
Go to business.google.com → Edit profile → Business category. Search for the most specific category that describes your core service — for example “Emergency Plumber” instead of just “Plumber”, or “Italian Restaurant” instead of “Restaurant”. Add up to 9 additional secondary categories for other services you offer. Tip: Search your top competitor on Google Maps, click on them, and look at their listed category — this tells you exactly which category Google associates with top rankings in your area.
Reason 6 — No Reviews or Very Low Rating
Google’s local ranking algorithm includes three main factors: relevance, distance, and prominence. Prominence is heavily influenced by your review count and rating. A business with zero reviews or a 2-star rating will be ranked far below competitors with 50+ reviews and 4.7 stars — even if everything else is equal.
How to fix: Start building reviews this week
Go to business.google.com → click “Ask for reviews” → copy your direct review link. Send this link via WhatsApp or text to your last 10 happy customers today with a simple message: “Hi [Name] — if you have 60 seconds, a quick Google review would really help us: [link].” Aim for 5–10 new reviews per month consistently. Never buy reviews — Google detects this and can permanently remove your listing. For a full guide on getting reviews without feeling pushy, see our Google Reviews guide here.
Reason 7 — NAP Inconsistency Across the Web
NAP stands for Name, Address, and Phone number. If these details are different across Google, your website, Facebook, Yelp, TripAdvisor, and other directories — Google gets confused about which information is correct and loses trust in your listing. Even small differences matter — “St” vs “Street”, “Ltd” vs “Limited”, or an old phone number on one directory.
How to fix: Audit and standardise your NAP everywhere
Decide on one exact format for your business name, address, and phone number. Then search your business name on Google and update every listing you find — Yelp, Facebook, your website footer, Apple Maps, Bing Places, TripAdvisor, and any industry directories. Free tools like Moz Local or BrightLocal can audit your citations and show you where inconsistencies exist. This process takes a few hours but has a significant positive impact on your local rankings over 4–8 weeks.
Reason 8 — You Recently Made an Edit
Any time you make changes to your Google Business Profile — especially to your business name, address, phone number, or category — Google temporarily reviews the change before making it live. Your profile may disappear from results for 24–72 hours during this review period. This is normal and almost always resolves itself.
How to fix: Wait 72 hours, then check
If you made a recent edit and your profile disappeared — wait 72 hours before taking any action. Check your dashboard at business.google.com for any notifications or requests for more information. If it has not returned after 5 business days, contact Google Business Profile support through the dashboard. Do not make additional edits while it is under review — this resets the clock.
Reason 9 — Distance and Competition (You’re Simply Being Outranked)
If your profile is verified, complete, and has good reviews — but you are still not appearing in the Local Pack (the 3-business box at the top of Google) — the issue may simply be competition and distance. Google’s algorithm shows businesses closest to the searcher and with the highest prominence. A competitor 500 metres closer with 200 reviews will outrank you even if your profile is technically better.
How to fix: Build local prominence over time
Post weekly on Google Business Profile — businesses that post regularly signal to Google that they are active and engaged. Go to business.google.com → Add update → post about offers, news, or tips. Aim for 1 post per week.
Build local citations — get your business listed on Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Maps, TripAdvisor (if relevant), and your industry-specific directories. Each consistent listing adds a small trust signal.
Get more reviews than your competitors — check how many reviews the top 3 businesses in your area have. Set that as your review target. Reviews are the fastest way to build local prominence.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Google Business Profile not showing up even though it’s verified?
Verification is just the first step — it makes your profile eligible to show up, not guaranteed to. The most common reasons a verified profile still doesn’t appear are: incomplete profile information, wrong business category, no or very few reviews, NAP inconsistency across other websites, or simply being outranked by better-optimised competitors in your area. Work through the checklist above to identify and fix your specific issue.
How long does it take for a Google Business Profile to show up?
After verification, most profiles appear in Google Search and Maps within 3–7 days. Brand new businesses may take up to 2–3 weeks. If you recently made edits to your profile, it may disappear temporarily for 24–72 hours while Google reviews the changes. If your profile has not appeared within 3 weeks of completing verification, contact Google Business Profile support through your dashboard.
Why did my Google Business Profile disappear suddenly?
Sudden disappearances are almost always caused by one of three things: you made a recent edit that triggered a review period (wait 72 hours), your profile has been suspended for a guideline violation (check your dashboard for a notice), or a competitor or user reported your listing as fraudulent (you will receive a notification). Log in to business.google.com and check your dashboard notifications first — the reason is almost always stated there.
My Google Business Profile shows up for my business name but not for my services — why?
This means your profile is verified and visible but not well-optimised for keyword searches. Focus on three things: select a more specific primary business category, add all your services with detailed descriptions in the “Services” section of your profile, and include your main service keywords naturally in your business description. Also increase your review count — businesses with more reviews rank for more keyword searches, not just their business name.
Can I get my suspended Google Business Profile back?
Yes — most suspensions are reversible. Log in to business.google.com and look for a “Suspended” notice. Read Google’s guidelines carefully, identify and fix whatever caused the suspension (most commonly: keyword-stuffed business name, virtual office address, or duplicate listing), then click “Appeal” and submit supporting evidence like photos of your physical signage and business registration documents. Google typically responds within 2 weeks.
